The decision by the Swedish Theft Prevention Association (SSF) to transfer responsibility to SBSC for self-declarations and approvals, means that the certification process is now handled by an independent third party. For product manufacturers, this provides a distinct, legally secured process, as well as increased visibility and searchability for approved tracking systems.

“With SBSC managing the entire certification process, we can ensure that systems are reviewed and approved in the same manner as other product certificates. This enhances the security of search and tracking systems and clarifies requirements for both product manufacturers and customers,” says Fredrik Backman, Team Leader for Product Certification at SBSC.

The new edition of SSF 1073 was published on September 19, 2024, and replaces the first edition, which will cease to be valid on February 19, 2025.

“There has been a demand of a review of SSF 1073 for a long time, and it is gratifying that this has now been accomplished. It is also positive that the responsibility for self-declarations has been transferred to SBSC, ensuring that the right actor handles the right matters,” says Anna Bennetter, Standard Manager at the Swedish Theft Prevention Association.

Key Changes in the Revised Standard:

  • Focus on Information Security: Recommendations for fundamental it security knowledge for personnel, for example in accordance with SSF 1101 – Cybersecurity Basic.
  • Improved Tracking Accuracy: The tracking systems’ accuracy has been enhanced to a precision of 100 meters.
  • Simplified Structure: The “Alarm Centers” appendix has been removed to make the standard more user-friendly.
  • New Definitions: Terminology has been clarified to ensure consistent interpretation of the standard.

Strengthened Trust and Increased Clarity

With SBSC as the responsible party for the certification process, trust in products certified according to SSF’s standards will be strengthened. This provides a better opportunity for product manufacturers to showcase their approved tracking systems, which in the end contributes to enhanced security and quality.
